Experience Design for Onboarding
Charting a better start up experience for distance learners

— The Context

Many children and young adults today struggle…

to reach their full potential in the traditional education system. The brick and mortar school experience does not always serve the needs of these students.

— The Challenge

K12 is a distance learning innovator,

providing students the flexibility to learn where, when and how best fits them. To ensure students are able to successfully participate in their individualized education, some K12 programs offer materials, communications and other activities via K12 loaner laptops. Families must configure these laptops prior to use. But data showed that the configuration process could be cumbersome and that there was room for improvement with this initial touchpoint.

— The Solution

To gauge the current experience, we conducted a hands-on walkthrough…

of the typical boot up with a K12 loaner laptop. We immediately determined a significant modification that could reduce startup processing time by 10 minutes. From there, we collaborated with the client team to bring their re-imagined startup experience to life — creating mood boards, storyboards, digital illustrations and finally a fully produced animated intro video. Working closely with K12’s experts, we were able to ensure video and assets were optimally integrated into the onboarding flow to better serve all users.
